The waters around southern Africa are strongly influenced by the Agulhas Current, which transports warm, saline water southward along the African coast and plays an important role in global ocean circulation. The CASISAC project investigated the factors driving changes in the Agulhas Current, with a focus on global warming and ozone depletion. In our sub-project, we analysed changes in mean and extreme precipitation over southern Africa and the influence of the Agulhas Current system on climate variability in the region, both over recent decades and in the future throughout the 21st century.
