RiskClima is a research project focused on developing georeferenced climate risk products for Brazil, with the objective of identifying and classifying areas most vulnerable to climate extremes. The project supports the assessment of multiple climate-related hazards, including droughts, floods, inundation, mass movements, heatwaves, coastal erosion, and potential impacts on human health.
The project combines Earth system modeling, climate projections, atmospheric indices, socio-environmental indicators, and population data to evaluate the spatial distribution of climate risk across Brazil. Climate information is derived from reanalysis products and climate model simulations, including ERA5, CMIP6 models, and CESM experiments. These datasets support the diagnosis of present-day climate conditions, the analysis of historical variability, and the projection of future climate extremes under different scenarios.
RiskClima also evaluates the interaction between extreme events and Brazilian biomes, as well as the role of social, environmental, and socio-environmental vulnerability in shaping climate risk. The project integrates climate-related hazards with indicators such as GDP, Human Development Index, demographic density, and other socio-environmental variables. It also considers the association between climate extremes and public health outcomes, including chronic non-communicable diseases, using health-related information from Brazilian public databases.
