Optimising forest management decisions for a low-carbon, climate resilient future in Europe

https://optforeu.eu/ OptFor-EU aims to work with forest managers and other forestry stakeholders to develop a decision support system (DSS) that provides them with suitable climate adaptation and mitigation options for the science-based optimisation of forest ecosystem services (including decarbonisation) and to improve the resilience of forests and their capacity to mitigate climate change across Europe.
Based on the use of existing data sources and state-of-the-art modelling tools, the application of novel ‘Essential Forest Mitigation Indicators’, and the relationships between climate change, forest changes and ecosystem services, OptFor-EU pursues five specific objectives:
• Providing an improved characterisation of the forest-climate nexus and forest ecosystem services
• Employing end-user-oriented process modelling
• Empowering forest managers and other stakeholders to make informed decisions to improve forest resilience and decarbonisation
• Providing a novel decision-support system
• Bridging the gap between the EU’s various strategic priorities, sound scientific evidence and the interests of stakeholders in forestry and forest-based sectors.
