Global high-resolution climate indices and statistics for agro-environmental research
Acronym
AgERA-Indices
Name
Global high-resolution climate indices and statistics for agro-environmental research
Description
This project focuses on the processing of high-resolution climate reanalysis data to generate easy-to-use agro-environmental indicators and variables. The core scientific idea is to bridge the temporal gap between daily climate data and coarser socio-economic datasets, which are typically annual (e.g., the Farm Accountancy Data Network). The provided files facilitate the integration of climate and economic data, enabling more comprehensive empirical research. Although our focus is on environmental economic research, monthly and annual variables may also benefit non-economic research approaches where daily data cannot easily be included. Specifically, the project converts daily climate variables from the AgERA5 reanalysis product (https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/datasets/sis-agrometeorological-indicators?tab=overview) into a large collection of monthly and annual bioclimatic indicators, agro-ecological indices, and statistics. This processing is facilitates the integration of environmental information with economic data, among others. Such integration enables analyses of farm vulnerability to climate conditions and improves policy support related to adaptation and preparedness for climate change. The resulting data collection also supports a broad range of environmental and ecological research, including crop growth and species distribution modeling, agricultural land suitability assessments, and environmental economic research. The project is managed and funded by the European Commission under the "Data Interoperability" administrative arrangement between the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development and the Directorate-General Joint Research Centre.
