Summary
Since the beginning of CALIPSO observations in June 2006 EARLINET has
performed correlative measurements during nearby overpasses of the satellite at
individual stations following a dedicated observational strategy. The EARLINET-CALIPSO
correlative measurement plan considers the criteria established in the CALIPSO
validation plan (http://calipsovalidation.hamptonu.edu). Participating EARLINET
stations perform measurements, as close in time as possible and for a period of at
least 30 min up to several hours, when CALIPSO overpasses their location within a
horizontal radius of 100 km. Within the 16-day observational cycle of CALIPSO each
station is overpassed within this distance 1-2 times during daytime (typically
between 1100 and 1400 UTC) and 1-2 times during night time (typically between 0000
and 0300 UTC). Additional measurements are performed, mainly on a non-regular basis,
when CALIPSO overpasses a neighboring station in order to study the horizontal
variability of the aerosol distribution. The time schedule for correlative observations
is calculated starting from the high-resolution ground-track data provided by NASA,
and is updated and distributed to whole network weekly.

The EARLINET-CALIPSO correlative dataset represents a statistically significant data
set to be used for the validation and full exploitation of the CALIPSO mission, for
studying the representativeness of cross sections along an orbit against network
observations on a continental scale, and for supporting the continuous, harmonized
observation of aerosol and clouds with remote-sensing techniques from space over long
time periods.

Description
observation:Level 2b - Geophysical Variable - Basic Quality Control
The new EARLINET volumes contains respect to the old ones an update in terms of temporal coverage extending now until 2015, but more important the new volumes are updating also the old data content in terms of quality control of the data.
In particular, respect to the quality assurance procedures including instrument intercomparisons, intercomparison of the retrieval algorithms and some ad hoc tools for the continuous quality check of the instruments and algorithms, quality control procedures are run on the EARLINET database since February 2017. The current EARLINET data volumes include the results of the QC procedures on all the files reported into the EARLINET database since its beginning, updating the old EARLINET volumes publishing on CERA.
Automatic QC procedures checking the compliance of the data to specific technical aspects run on fly during the data submission phase. Off-line quality control procedures run systematically every 3 months on the whole database for further controls, mainly about the content of the data in terms of aerosol optical properties.
Each file contains information about the compliance of the file itself with specific quality control procedures established within the network. First of all, each file is labelled as compliant to: all the QCs, only the technical QCs, neither physical and technical implemented QC procedures. The precise information about the compliance/not compliance to each specific QC tests is reported in additional variables for technical and physical quality control procedures. A full documentation describing the quality control procedure is reported at the EARLINET website https://www.earlinet.org/index.php?id=125
The instruments and the algorithms used within the network have been intercompared and assessed. Relevant publications are reported in the references.
